The Westpac Waikato Air Ambulance and a fixed wing aeroplane are dedicated 24 hour, 7 day a week air ambulances.
Based in Hamilton they provide rapid response medical care to the Waikato, King Country and Bay of Plenty communities.
Bell 222B Helicopter
Twin engine helicopter based at Waikato Hospital.
Crew: Usually 1 pilot, 1 patient, 1 doctor, 1 flight nurse
or 2 St John Ambulance paramedics.
Special Equipment:
Auto Pilot
Global Positioning System (GPS) Navigation.
Night Sun 30 Million Candle power search light.
Full Medical Kit and equipment.
On board Oxygen
The Bell 222 helicopter is the only certified single-pilot
IFR helicopter in Australasia. This means that only one qualified
pilot is required to fly it. IFR means flight is with reference
to the instruments only, i.e. under instrument flight rules.
This allows the Air Ambulance to operate safely at night and
in poor weather.

Piper Chieftain
Twin engine Air plane based at Hamilton Airport.
Used mainly for the transportation of patients between hospitals but is commonly used in search and rescue.
Crew: Usually 2 pilots, 1 patient, 1 doctor, 1 flight nurse
or 2 St John Ambulance paramedics.
