On Sunday morning the Greenlea Rescue Helicopter crew were dispatched to Tawhai Falls in the Tongariro National Park.
Two friends who are experienced kayakers were kayaking off the 13m high falls. One of the men landed too flat causing a hard landing and injuring his back. His friend was able to get him to the edge of the pool next to the falls and called for help.
The onboard Intensive Care Paramedic was winched into the rocks below the falls. He treated the patient before being winched out and transported to Rotorua Hospital.
