At 9pm on Saturday evening, the TECT Rescue Helicopter was tasked by police to search for a surfer that was last seen 1 1/2 kilometres offshore just before darkness.
The TECT Rescue Helicopter crew used night-vision goggles to perform the search along the coastline and out to sea between Papamoa and Motiti Island.
The crew finished the search with no sightings of the missing surfer.
