The team was dispatched to Hamilton with a three-person (two nurses, one doctor) Intensive Care team at 1800hrs to retrieve a woman in her early 20s who had been seriously injured in a head-on motor vehicle accident between Gisborne and Wairoa yesterday morning.
Her life-threatening injuries included head injury, multiple complicated fractures, lacerations, and internal injuries.
The team encountered significant weather in the form of thunderstorms, strong winds and icing during the flights to and from Gisborne.
Flight time was approximately 45 minutes in each direction.
