An Auckland truck driver has had a lucky escape after the truck he was driving left the road and ended up in a creek.
The Palmerston North Rescue Helicopter crew were dispatched shortly after 6.00am.
It is understood the driver was able to extricate himself from the wreckage, despite his injuries.
“Low cloud and rain prevented the helicopter from getting directly to the scene, but anticipating this, the St John Ambulance crew drove the patient a short distance down State Highway 1 to meet the chopper,” Pilot Chris Moody said.
Mangaweka Fire Brigade assisted ambulance staff load the 50-year-old male into the chopper, so he could be airlifted to Palmerston North Hospital.
The rescue helicopter was dispatched due to the serious condition of the patient’s condition and the urgent need for specialist medical care.
